"The Good Ol' Days"

I miss the “social” aspect of social media.

All the “Hi’s” and “How do you do’s?”

I miss the days before heated exchanges

Over the latest topic on the evening news.

I miss the days before party lines divided us.

I don’t care who you voted for, for they are not you.

I miss the days before religion influenced our posts.

And God decided which friendships were true.

Can’t we be what Facebook deems us?

Can’t we truly return to being “friends”?

Can’t we share photos, and jokes, and dreams,

Instead of arguing over odds and ends?

I just want to know that your family is well.

I want to share your milestones and your success.

I want to know about your passions and celebrations,

And I want to be there to support you for all the rest.

Maybe I’m old fashioned, or plain obsolete.

But my friends are varied and widely dispersed

And I liked having a place where we could all gather

To share in the best of times, instead of the worst.

I’ll still be around, for those of you interested,

To be there for you in personal ways.

But leave me out of the politics and religion,

I’m just a social butterfly longing for the good ol’ days.
