Today, someone wished me Happy Hannukah
And though I don’t celebrate,
I smiled back and nodded,
Then wished him the very same.
And if someone wished me Happy Kwanzaa -
Or any other holiday -
I promise I would smile and nod
And greet them the same way.
I don’t understand those
Who nitpick what people say
When it’s clear that they’re wishing you happiness,
Taking the time out of their day.
Why can’t we be grateful
For the kindness; for the cheer?
Instead of snarling and replying
“That’s not what we celebrate here.”
If someone takes a moment
To wish you happiness or more,
Just be grateful, regardless
Of what they’re wishing it for.
So, please, stop being picky,
Regardless what you believe,
And just think of what a peaceful season
Together, we could achieve.
