"One Brief Moment"

For one brief moment,
You were there.
For one glimmering moment
your eyes were clear
and your mind was sharp
and you were my Daddy again.
And so
I unburdened my heart.
I poured my
anxiety and heartache
out to you
and as my lips trembled
and a lump formed in my throat,
you frowned.
“Don’t cry.”
I tried not to
as I told you I was
no longer asking you to fight.
As I gave you my blessing
to do what was best for you.
And so, we talked about our options
a moment longer…
…before you were gone.
The clarity in your gaze disappeared
and your mind wandered
to the pretty nurse, and
to your keys and your wallet
and the location of your beloved car.
And so, I was left without your answer.
But, I guess that was my answer.
I’ll do right by you, I promise.
Others may not understand.
They may question and doubt me,
and that’s okay.
Because I understand
why they question and doubt me.
But you are not happy here.
You are suffering.
Day in and day out, I see you in pain.
I see you in sickness.
I see you confused and scared.
I see you struggling.
And I know any other option
will only prolong your suffering.
I know any other option is selfish,
And I’ve been selfish far too long.
But I won’t be selfish anymore.
I’ll do right by you, Daddy,
No matter how hard it is.
I’ll bring you to the house
you made a home
And I’ll love you,
And I won’t leave your side
until the day you leave mine.
Thank you for this extraordinary life you’ve given me.
Thank you for being the best Daddy you could be.
I’ll love you, forever and always.
Now sleep, Daddy.
Find peace.
